What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify how scientific evidence helps government leaders weigh public issues. They explain that evidence informs a choice, while laws, costs, ethics, and public needs may also affect the final decision.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can connect a public issue to relevant data and the officials responsible for acting. They can explain both the value and the limits of scientific evidence in making a policy choice.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think scientists make policy decisions alone or that data always point to one clear choice. They may also confuse scientific evidence with personal opinion or assume every issue belongs to the federal government.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A county is considering closing a lake after high bacteria readings. Name one scientific finding officials need and one non-scientific factor they may consider.
