What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine a science-related case and identify how public priorities, community beliefs, and money shape research or its use. They also explain how scientific findings can change laws, behavior, spending, or jobs.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a case such as water pollution testing, a student can trace cause and effect in both directions using case details. The student can separate scientific evidence from stakeholder goals and opinions.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume scientific research is never influenced by funding, laws, or public pressure. They may treat political concerns as only party politics or describe only how science affects society, not how society affects science.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A town cuts funding for algae monitoring because of cost, but later research findings lead to stricter fertilizer rules. Explain each direction of influence using one detail from the case.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups stakeholder, budget, law, and research cards, then have them arrange the cards into two cause-and-effect chains.
Ask students to write which factor most influenced a town's response to contaminated water and defend their answer with evidence.
Play a cause-and-effect relay where teams match science events with political, social, or economic causes and consequences.
Compare a local recycling, water, or mosquito-control policy with the scientific evidence and community concerns behind it.
