What Students Need to Do: Students identify what a scientific model represents and why scientists use it. They explain how models help describe systems, test ideas, or make predictions. They also recognize that every model has limits.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a diagram, physical model, or simulation, students can name the real system it represents. They can explain one useful feature, make a supported prediction, and identify one limitation.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think a model must be a physical object or an exact copy of reality. They may treat models as proven facts or assume an imperfect model is useless. Some overlook diagrams, equations, and computer simulations as models.
How to Assess It: Display a labeled cross-section model of Earth. Ask students to write what it represents, one way it helps scientists, and one limitation.

Lesson moves

Build a clay Earth model, cut it open, and label what the model shows accurately and what it leaves out.
Compare a food web diagram with a real ecosystem, then write how the model helps explain changes in one population.
Match cards showing models, such as maps and diagrams, with cards naming their uses and limitations.
Examine a hurricane forecast cone and discuss what the model predicts, what remains uncertain, and how communities use the information.
