The Standard
Define a problem from the sixth grade curriculum, use appropriate reference materials to support scientific understanding, plan and carry out scientific investigation of various types, such as systematic observations or experiments, identify variables, collect and organize data, interpret data in charts, tables, and graphics, analyze information, make predictions, and defend conclusions.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students turn a science question into an investigation they can carry out. They choose reliable sources, name variables, gather and organize measurements, then find patterns in tables and graphs. They use evidence to predict outcomes and justify a conclusion.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student writes a testable question, identifies what changes and what is measured, and keeps other conditions consistent. The student records accurate data, creates a clear graph, explains the pattern, and supports a conclusion with evidence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may change several factors at once or confuse the changed variable with the measured variable. They may treat a prediction as a conclusion or choose only data that supports their guess. Some assume any website is a reliable science source.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: A student tests how water temperature affects sugar dissolving time. Identify the changed, measured, and controlled variables, then write a conclusion supported by the data table.
