The Standard

Define a problem from the seventh grade curriculum, use appropriate reference materials to support scientific understanding, plan and carry out scientific investigation of various types, such as systematic observations or experiments, identify variables, collect and organize data, interpret data in charts, tables, and graphics, analyze information, make predictions, and defend conclusions.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students turn a science problem into a testable question and use reliable sources to build background knowledge. They plan an observation or experiment, name variables, gather and organize data, then read charts and graphs. They make predictions and defend a conclusion with evidence.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can design a fair test with a clear independent variable, dependent variable, controlled variables, repeated trials, and a usable data table. The student accurately graphs results, identifies patterns, and explains whether the evidence supports the prediction.

Common Misconceptions

Students often confuse a topic with a testable question, or mix up independent and dependent variables. They may treat one trial as enough or mistake a prediction for a conclusion. Some accept information from any website without checking the source.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Sugar dissolving times are 180 seconds at 10°C, 120 at 25°C, 60 at 40°C, and 35 at 60°C. Students identify both variables, graph the data, predict the time at 50°C, and write one conclusion supported by two data points.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Test three paper towel brands for absorbency using equal-size sheets, measured water, repeated trials, and a student-designed data table.

  2. Write which source, a university article or an anonymous post, better supports an investigation, and cite two reasons.

  3. Play a card sort matching investigation scenarios to independent variables, dependent variables, controls, observations, predictions, and conclusions.

  4. Measure classroom temperatures throughout the day, then use the data to recommend where heat-sensitive supplies should be stored.
