What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify a scientific law as a statement describing a consistent pattern or relationship in nature under stated conditions. They explain how it differs from a rule created by people.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can label examples as scientific laws or societal laws and justify each choice. They can name the conditions and relationship described by a scientific law.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think scientific laws tell nature what to do. They may assume laws have no limits or conditions. Some believe a theory becomes a law after enough evidence is collected.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: “A metal rod expands when heated, while a city limits parking to two hours. Which describes a scientific law, and why?”

Ways to Teach It
Hang equal masses from a spring, measure each stretch, and record the relationship while noting the spring’s limits.
Ask students to explain in writing why a law of motion differs from a school attendance law.
Sort scenario cards into scientific law, societal law, or neither, then defend each choice with one sentence.
