What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students observe an object starting or changing motion and name the force responsible. They distinguish contact forces, such as a hand pushing, from gravity pulling an object downward.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a photo, demonstration, or short scenario, students correctly identify the force and describe how the object moves. They recognize gravity as the cause of downward motion when objects fall.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think every moving object still has a push acting on it. They may also think gravity only acts on heavy objects or begins only after an object is dropped.
How to Assess It
- Show pictures of a kicked ball, an opened drawer, and falling keys. Have students name the force causing each object to begin moving.

Ways to Teach It
Use toy cars, ramps, magnets, and string so students make objects move, then label each force and its direction.
Drop a ball and ask students to write what moves it downward when no hand is touching it.
Play Force Charades, with students acting out pushing, pulling, dropping, or magnetic attraction while classmates name each force.
Analyze a grocery cart, falling keys, and an opening drawer, then identify the force causing each motion.
