What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students observe what happens when objects are released. They explain that objects move downward unless a hand, table, string, or other support holds them up.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can predict that a released object will fall toward the ground. The student can identify what is supporting an object that does not fall.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think only heavy objects fall, or that lighter objects always fall more slowly. They may also think tables and shelves stop gravity instead of supporting objects against its pull.
How to Assess It
- Show a picture of a ball on a table, then ask, “What will happen if the table is removed, and why?”

Ways to Teach It
Let students drop a block, feather, spoon, and paper ball, then sort observations into fell quickly or fell slowly.
Ask students to draw an object being held up and label what supports it.
Play “Drop or Stay” by showing object pictures while students predict what happens when each support is removed.
Walk around the classroom and list objects held up by shelves, hooks, tables, hands, or strings.
