What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students observe what happens when different objects are released. They explain that gravity pulls each object toward the ground without direct contact.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can predict that a released object will move toward the ground. They can name gravity as the pull causing that motion.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think only heavy objects are affected, or that a hand must push an object down. They may also think heavier objects always fall faster.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Draw a ball after it is released from a hand. Add an arrow showing its motion and label what causes it.
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Drop a pom-pom, crayon, block, and ball from the same height, then record the direction each object moves.
Ask, “Why does a ball return to the ground after you toss it upward?” and have students draw and explain their thinking.
Play Predict and Drop by showing an object, collecting student predictions, then releasing it to check where it moves.
Watch a ball roll down a playground slide, then discuss how gravity helps move the ball toward the ground.
