What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how gravity pulls gas, dust, and larger bodies together to form stars, planets, and solar systems. They connect mass and distance to gravitational pull and orbital motion.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can use a diagram to trace how a cloud of matter becomes an organized solar system. They can predict how changing mass or distance affects gravitational pull and motion.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think gravity exists only near Earth or disappears in space. They may think orbiting objects remain still, or that gravity should pull them straight into the larger body. Some think only larger objects exert gravity.
How to Assess It
- Show a gas cloud forming a star and a planet orbiting it. Ask students to explain gravity's role in both stages and predict what changes if the star gains mass.

Ways to Teach It
Stretch fabric over a hoop, roll marbles around a weighted ball, and record how central mass and starting speed change each path.
Write a claim explaining how gravity can both build a solar system and keep its planets moving in orbits.
