What Students Need to Do: Students compare a sky viewed without equipment to a view made with a telescope. They count or estimate the stars in each view and use the results as evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students identify the telescope view as showing many more stars. They explain that telescopes reveal faint stars that human eyes cannot see alone.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think telescopes create stars or move stars closer to Earth. They may also think every star looks larger through a telescope.
How to Assess It: Show one naked-eye sky image and one telescope image. Ask, "Which view shows more stars, and why can they be seen?"

Lesson moves

Give pairs sparse and dense star-field cards, then have them count visible stars and label each as a naked-eye or telescope view.
Ask students to write two sentences explaining why a telescope image contains stars missing from a naked-eye view.
Play a card sort where teams match naked-eye sky pictures with telescope pictures of the same area and explain each match.
Compare a constellation chart with an observatory photograph, then list stars visible only in the photograph.
