What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use a magnifier to observe small objects and details. They compare what they see with and without the magnifier.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students hold and adjust a magnifier until an object looks clear. They identify details that were hard to see with their eyes alone.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a magnifier makes an object physically larger. They may also place the lens against their eye or object instead of adjusting the distance for focus.
How to Assess It
- Give each student a leaf and a magnifier. Ask them to draw one detail seen without the lens and one new detail seen with it.

Ways to Teach It
Set out leaves, coins, fabric, and feathers, then have students observe and sketch each item with and without a hand lens.
Ask students to explain why a scientist might use a magnifier when studying an insect wing.
Play Detail Detective by showing magnified object pictures and having teams match each picture to the correct classroom object.
Examine a printed fingerprint with a magnifier, then discuss how investigators use enlarged details to compare patterns.
