What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students observe moving objects and describe how they move. They compare motions using words such as fast, slow, straight, curved, and back and forth.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can make an object move in more than one way and name each motion. The student can compare two movements and explain what was observed.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse moving fast with traveling far. They may also think bigger objects always move faster or that rolling objects always move at the same speed.
How to Assess It
- Give each student a toy car and a cardboard ramp. Say, "Show the car moving fast, then slow, and tell what you changed."

Ways to Teach It
Roll toy cars down cardboard ramps set at two heights, then sort picture cards under fast and slow.
Show a bouncing ball and spinning top, then ask, "How are their movements alike and different?"
Play Motion Charades: students draw a card labeled fast, slow, straight, or curved and act it out for classmates to name.
Watch bicycles, walkers, and swings on the playground, then record one fast and one slow example with drawings.
