What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify everyday jobs that need energy and name a likely source, such as electricity, gas, gasoline, or sunlight. They explain how the energy helps people complete each job.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can match common appliances and vehicles to an energy source and describe what the energy makes possible. They recognize that different energy sources can do similar jobs.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think every appliance and vehicle uses electricity, or that all cars use gasoline. They may name a device, such as an oven, when asked to name its energy source.
How to Assess It
- Show pictures of a stove, air conditioner, heater, and car. Ask students to choose two, name each energy source, and explain its job.

Ways to Teach It
Have pairs sort picture cards into cooking, warming, cooling, and transportation groups, then label the likely energy source for each.
Ask students to explain which home task would be hardest without energy and why.
Play a matching game with appliance cards, vehicle cards, energy source cards, and job cards.
Students complete a home energy hunt by drawing three devices their family uses and labeling what each device does.
