What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students observe simple objects and events, then tell which kinds of energy are present. They use evidence such as brightness, warmth, vibration, a working circuit, stored fuel, or motion.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can identify all relevant energy forms in a ringing phone, toaster, flashlight, battery, meal, and rolling ball. The student explains each choice with an observation or a fact about stored energy.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name the object, such as a battery, instead of the energy form. They often assign only one form to an event that shows several. They may think chemical energy means dangerous chemicals, missing food, fuel, and batteries.
How to Assess It
- On an exit ticket, list sunlight reaching a desk, a mug warming a spoon, a ringing bell, current in a wire, stored food energy, and a rolling cart. Students name each energy form and give evidence for two answers.

Ways to Teach It
Set up six stations with a flashlight, sealed warm pack, tuning fork, battery circuit, sealed glow stick, and windup toy; students record evidence.
Have students write which energy forms appear when a battery-powered toy moves, lights up, and makes noise, then cite evidence for each.
Teams sort picture cards under six energy labels, then challenge one placement by asking the other team to explain its evidence.
Walk through the classroom and list energy forms in working lights, speakers, outlets, warm vents, snacks, and moving fan blades.
