What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain how moving air or water can push objects and cause motion. They identify examples such as wind turning a turbine or water spinning a wheel.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a picture or demonstration, students identify the energy source and describe what it moves. They predict how faster-moving air or water may change the motion.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think air cannot move objects because it is invisible. They may also think still water provides energy, rather than recognizing that the water must move.

How to Assess It

Show a picture of a wind turbine and a water wheel. Ask students to name the energy source and explain how it moves each object.

  1. Use a fan at two speeds to spin a pinwheel, then record how the pinwheel’s motion changes.

  2. Write an explanation for this prompt: How can moving water make a toy boat travel downstream?

  4. Examine photos of wind turbines and hydroelectric dams, then identify what moves and what useful work results.
