What Students Need to Do: Students point to and name a plant’s roots, stem, leaves, and flowers. They locate each part on a real plant, model, or picture.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student correctly labels the four parts on an unfamiliar plant picture. The student can also point out each part on a real plant, even when some roots are hidden.
Common Misconceptions: Students may call the whole plant a flower or confuse stems with roots. They may also think every plant has visible flowers or that roots grow above the soil.
How to Assess It: Give students an unlabeled plant picture and ask, “Draw a line to each part and label the roots, stem, leaves, and flowers.”

Lesson moves

Give pairs a small potted plant to observe, then have them place word cards beside the roots, stem, leaves, and flowers.
Show two different plants and ask, “Which parts look alike, and which parts look different?”
Play Plant Part Match by having students pair picture cards showing plant parts with the correct name cards.
Examine a carrot, celery stalk, spinach leaf, and broccoli floret, then identify which plant part people eat.
