Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students connect unit circle values to graphs of sine, cosine, and tangent. They describe graph features and transformations, then use trigonometric functions to model repeating situations.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students accurately graph sine, cosine, and tangent functions with labeled scales and key features. They can choose a function, write a model, and use it to answer a question about periodic data.
Common Misconceptions: Students often confuse amplitude with vertical shift and use the coefficient of x as the period. They may mix degrees and radians or draw tangent graphs without asymptotes.
How to Assess It: Give students y = -2 cos(πt/6) + 5. Ask them to sketch one period and label the period, midline, maximum, and minimum.

Lesson moves

Rotate a marked point around a paper unit circle, record its height every 30 degrees, and plot the values to build a sine graph.
Compare y = sin x and y = sin 2x, then write why the second graph completes cycles faster.
Match cards showing equations, graphs, periods, amplitudes, and midlines, then justify each set to a partner.
Use a table of hourly tide heights to estimate a sinusoidal model, then predict the next high tide.
