What Students Need to Do: Students find determinants and use them to decide whether square matrices are invertible. They calculate inverses, solve matrix equations, and interpret the resulting values in mathematical or real-world settings.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students accurately calculate a determinant and use it to decide whether an inverse exists. They find the inverse, solve a matrix equation, and explain the solution using the problem context.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think every square matrix has an inverse, including one with determinant zero. They may reverse multiplication order or make sign errors when calculating a 2 by 2 inverse. Some treat the determinant as a matrix rather than a single number.
How to Assess It: Give A = [[2, 1], [1, 1]] and B = [[8], [5]]. Ask students to find det(A), calculate A⁻¹, solve AX = B, and check the solution.

Lesson moves

Give pairs laminated matrix cards to match each matrix with its determinant, inverse, or a card stating that no inverse exists.
Ask students to explain in writing why a determinant of zero prevents a matrix equation from having one unique solution.
Run a relay where teams calculate determinants, find inverses, solve matrix equations, and verify answers by multiplication.
