What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose the correct matrix operation for a given problem and check that the dimensions work. They calculate results and interpret the entries using the problem's quantities and units.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students accurately add and subtract matrices with matching dimensions. They multiply compatible matrices using row-by-column products and explain what each resulting entry means in context.

Common Misconceptions

Students may add matrices with different dimensions or multiply corresponding entries instead of using row-by-column products. They may assume multiplication is commutative or give the product incorrect dimensions.

How to Assess It

Give students two 2 by 2 inventory matrices and a 2 by 1 price matrix. Ask them to find combined inventory and total value, showing each operation.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build two matrices with number tiles, combine matching positions for addition, then use row and column strips to model one product.

  2. Write when matrix multiplication is possible, then explain why multiplying corresponding entries does not produce the matrix product.

  3. Play Dimension Match: students pair matrix cards that can be added or multiplied, then compute one valid operation to keep each pair.

  4. Use store sales matrices for two weeks to find combined sales, changes, and revenue totals after multiplying by a price matrix.
