What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students organize contextual data into matrices, with rows and columns assigned clear meanings. They perform suitable matrix operations and interpret the resulting entries, dimensions, and units.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given data tables, a student builds correctly labeled matrices and chooses a valid operation to answer a question. The student computes accurately and explains what each relevant entry means in context.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often switch row and column meanings when building a matrix. They may combine matrices with different dimensions. They may multiply entries incorrectly or report results without labels or units.
How to Assess It
- Give two tables showing adult and student ticket sales at two performances. Ask students to create matrices, add them, and explain one entry in the result.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups sales data on cards, then have them arrange the cards into labeled matrices and combine totals.
Ask students to explain how switching rows and columns changes the meaning of a matrix, even when the numbers stay the same.
Play a matrix match game where students pair context cards with matrices, operations, and correctly interpreted results.
Use monthly store sales from two locations to compare totals, differences, and changes across product categories.
