Florida B.E.S.T. MA.912.DP.3.1

MathGrades 9–12Solve problems involving categorical data.

The Standard

Construct a two-way frequency table summarizing bivariate categorical data. Interpret joint and marginal frequencies and determine possible associations in terms of a real-world context.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students organize paired category responses into rows and columns, then calculate cell counts and totals. They interpret what those values mean and compare groups to decide whether the two variables may be associated.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student places each data pair in the correct cell and calculates accurate row and column totals. The student uses counts or proportions to describe a possible association and explains the result in context without claiming causation.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse interior cell counts with row or column totals. They may compare raw counts when group sizes differ, or claim that an association proves causation.

How to Assess It

Give students 20 paired responses about lunch choice and grade level. Ask them to build a two-way table, identify one joint frequency and two marginal frequencies, then state whether an association appears.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have students survey classmates about transportation and breakfast, record responses on sticky notes, and build a two-way table on poster paper.

  2. Show a table of study location and assignment completion, then ask students to write whether an association appears and cite two values.

  3. Give pairs category cards to sort into a blank table, with one point for each correct cell, total, and interpretation.

  4. Use school club membership and grade-level data to decide which grade should receive targeted club recruitment materials.
