What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students define one unknown and translate fees, rates, discounts, or equal costs into an equation with several steps. They solve, check the result in the situation, and report it with correct units.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students define the variable, organize the given amounts, and write an equation that matches the situation. They solve accurately, substitute the result to check it, and explain what the answer means with units.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add a fixed fee to a rate before multiplying, or distribute a factor to only one term. They may perform different operations on each side or combine unlike terms. Some give a number without units or fail to check whether it fits the situation.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: “Plan A costs $18 plus $7 per hour. Plan B costs $8 plus $9 per hour. When do they cost the same?” Require a variable, equation, solution, and labeled answer.

Ways to Teach It
Use balance mats and algebra tiles to model a fee, repeated costs, and equal totals before solving the matching equation.
Ask students to explain why 18 + 7h = 8 + 9h represents two rental plans costing the same amount.
Give pairs card sets with situations, equations, solutions, and labeled answers to match, then have them correct one mismatched set.
Compare two local phone, rental, or membership pricing plans and calculate when their total costs are equal.
