What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students break a polynomial into factors using common factors, patterns, grouping, or roots. They factor as far as possible over either the real or complex numbers and verify the product.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student selects an efficient method, such as grouping, identities, or using known roots. The student factors completely over the stated number system and checks the result by multiplication.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may miss a greatest common factor or stop before every factor is irreducible in the chosen number system. They may make sign errors, mishandle i² = -1, or forget that nonreal roots occur in conjugate pairs for polynomials with real coefficients.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: Factor x⁴ + 5x² + 4 completely over the real numbers, then over the complex numbers. Verify one form by multiplication.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups polynomial, factor, and root cards to match, then have them verify each match by multiplying the factors.
Ask students to explain why x² + 9 is irreducible over the reals but factors over the complex numbers.
Run a factoring relay using four expressions that require a GCF, grouping, difference of squares, and complex roots.
Factor P(x) = x³ - 6x² + 11x - 6, then interpret its zeros as break-even production levels.
