What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students rewrite higher-degree polynomial equations as products of simpler factors. They solve each factor, including quadratic factors with real or nonreal complex roots, and check the results.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can rewrite x⁴ − x² − 6 as (x² − 3)(x² + 2) and find all four roots. They use ± correctly and separate mathematical solutions from any restrictions in the context.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often divide by a variable and lose the zero solution. They may stop at x² = −2 and say there is no solution instead of using i. They also omit ± or reverse the signs of roots from factors.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Solve x⁴ − x² − 6 = 0. Show the factorization, list all solutions, and label each as real or nonreal complex.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups cards showing expanded polynomials, factored forms, and root sets, then have them build matching trios and explain each match.
Ask students to compare solving x⁴ − 5x² + 4 = 0 by substitution and direct factoring, then write which structure made each method work.
Run a factor-and-root relay where teams factor one equation, solve every factor, and pass their work to a checker.
Model a 12-inch square box with corner cuts, solve x(12 − 2x)² = 128, and reject roots that cannot be cut.
