What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students add and subtract by combining like terms, multiply using distribution, and divide polynomials to find a quotient and possible remainder. They choose an operation from a situation and interpret the result.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student selects the correct operation from a problem and writes the needed polynomial expression. They simplify accurately and check division by multiplying the quotient and divisor.

Common Misconceptions

Students often combine unlike terms, such as x² and x. They may change only the first sign when subtracting or add exponents when adding terms. In division, they may ignore missing powers or the remainder.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Let P = x² + 5x + 6 and Q = x + 2. Find P + Q, P − Q, PQ, and P ÷ Q, then verify the quotient.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use algebra tiles to model (x + 2)(x + 3), then rearrange the product to recover each factor through division.

  2. Ask students to explain why (3x² − 2x) − (x² + 5x) requires changing both signs in the second polynomial.

  3. Give pairs a card sort matching polynomial operation problems to simplified answers, including one quotient with a remainder.

  4. Model a rectangular garden with polynomial side lengths, then calculate its area and divide the area to recover a missing side.
