What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use binomial coefficients to expand expressions such as (x + 3)^4 or (2x - y)^5. They track coefficient patterns, powers, and signs to write an equivalent polynomial.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly expand powers of binomials and combine numerical factors. They use Pascal’s Triangle or combinations, decrease one exponent, increase the other, and handle negative terms correctly.

Common Misconceptions

Students may use the wrong row of Pascal’s Triangle or keep the same exponent on every term. They may also miss alternating signs in expressions such as (x - 2)^5 or forget to raise coefficients to powers.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: Expand and simplify (2x - 1)^4 using the Binomial Theorem. Label the binomial coefficients before simplifying.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build Pascal’s Triangle with numbered cards, then use one row to expand (x + 2)^5 and check each term.

  2. Ask students to explain why the exponents in every term of (a + b)^6 add to 6.

  3. Play a matching game with binomial powers, coefficient lists, and completed polynomial expansions on separate cards.

  4. Use (p + q)^5 to write the probability terms for five quality checks, where each item passes or fails.
