What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students calculate with positive and negative whole numbers using all four operations. They explain how signs affect results and connect equations to number lines, counters, or real situations.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately add, subtract, multiply, and divide positive and negative integers. They use number lines, counters, or operation rules to explain signs and check whether answers are reasonable.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add absolute values and attach a negative sign whenever one number is negative. They may also confuse subtracting a negative with subtracting a positive or apply multiplication sign rules to addition.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket with three problems: −7 + 12, 4 − (−9), and (−6)(−3). Ask students to solve and explain one answer with a model or rule.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs red and yellow counters to model zero pairs, then solve integer addition and subtraction problems.
Ask students to explain why 5 − (−3) equals 8 using a number line and a written rule.
Play integer operation bingo using teacher-called expressions and student boards filled with possible answers.
Use gains and losses from a mock bank account to calculate balances after several deposits, purchases, and fees.
