What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students rewrite powers as repeated multiplication, then calculate each value. They work with positive fractions, positive decimals, and integers, including negative bases shown with parentheses.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can correctly find values such as (3/4)^3, 1.2^2, and (-2)^5. The student shows repeated multiplication and uses signs and parentheses correctly.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may multiply the base by the exponent instead of using repeated multiplication. They may apply the exponent only to a fraction’s numerator or ignore parentheses around a negative base.
How to Assess It
- Use an exit ticket with three problems: (2/3)^3, 1.5^2, and (-3)^4. Ask students to show repeated multiplication for one problem.

Ways to Teach It
Give students base, exponent, and multiplication cards to build and solve powers such as 4^3, (1/2)^3, and (-2)^4.
Ask students to explain why (-3)^2 and -3^2 can have different values, using repeated multiplication in their response.
Play Power Match, where students pair expression cards with repeated multiplication cards and value cards.
Calculate square patio areas using side lengths of 1.5, 2.25, and 3 meters, writing each calculation as a power.
