What Students Need to Do
- Students identify a factor shared by both addends and use the distributive property in reverse. They divide each addend by that factor to build the expression inside parentheses.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can rewrite 18 + 24 as 6(3 + 4) and explain where each number came from. They can expand the expression to confirm it equals the original sum.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may divide only one addend by the common factor or add the factor inside the parentheses. Some think they must always use the greatest common factor, even when another shared factor works.
How to Assess It
- Ask: Rewrite 28 + 42 as a common factor times a sum. Expand your expression to check it.
