What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students organize a set of numbers and calculate its average, middle value, most frequent value, and spread. They explain what each result means in the given situation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students calculate each measure accurately, including for an even number of values or data with repeated values. They explain each result using the context and correct units.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may find the median before ordering the values or forget to average the two middle values. They may divide incorrectly when finding the mean, treat frequency as the mode, or find range by counting values instead of subtracting.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “A runner recorded 6, 8, 8, 10, and 13 miles. Find each measure and explain what it shows.”

Ways to Teach It
Give groups sticky notes labeled 4, 6, 6, 9, and 10, then have them order the values and label each measure.
Ask, “Which measure best describes typical daily screen time when one student reports 12 hours, and why?”
Run a four-corner game where each corner is mean, median, mode, or range, and students move to the answer for each clue.
Have students use seven days of local temperatures to calculate each measure and write one sentence explaining what each value tells.
