What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read whole-number data from tables and line plots. They calculate the mean, median, mode, or range and connect each result to the values shown.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly read values and frequencies from tables and line plots. They select and calculate the requested measure, then use the data display to explain their answer.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse median with mean or forget to order values before finding the median. They may choose the most frequent value as the mode’s position, or subtract adjacent values instead of the least value from the greatest for range.
How to Assess It
- Give students the data set 3, 5, 5, 7, 10. Ask them to find the mean, median, mode, and range, then explain one answer.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs linking cubes to build five data values, then have them reorder the towers and calculate mean, median, mode, and range.
Ask students to write which measure best describes a data set with one unusually high value and explain their choice.
Play Measure Match with cards showing data sets and cards showing their means, medians, modes, or ranges.
Collect classmates’ daily reading minutes in a table, then calculate and compare the mean, median, mode, and range.
