What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide whether a question will lead to a set of numbers that can vary. They also write clear questions about a defined group and measurable amount.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can sort questions by whether they will produce varied numerical answers. They can write a clear question that names a group and a measurable quantity.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think any question containing a number counts, even when it has one fixed answer. They may also use yes-or-no questions, collect categories instead of numbers, or leave the group unclear.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Is ‘How many minutes do students in our class spend on homework each night?’ suitable for a data study? Explain why.”

Ways to Teach It
Have students survey ten classmates about minutes spent reading last night, record the answers, and check whether the values vary.
Ask students to explain why “How old is our principal?” differs from “How old are the teachers at our school?”
Sort question cards into three groups: varied numerical answers, one fixed answer, and nonnumerical answers.
Use cafeteria wait times to write a question that could help the school compare how long students wait on different days.
