What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read a fraction such as 7/4 and write it as 7 fourths and seven fourths. They work with fractions below, equal to, and greater than one.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given any one form, students accurately produce the other two without changing the fraction. They read 7/4 as seven fourths and recognize that it is greater than one.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may reverse the numerator and denominator when changing forms. They may write one thirds instead of one third, or use fourth instead of fourths for 5/4. Some think a fraction greater than one must be rewritten as a mixed number.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: Write 9/4 in numeral-word form and word form, then write “six fifths” in standard form.

Ways to Teach It
Build 5/4 with fourth-size fraction strips, then label the model with cards reading 5/4, 5 fourths, and five fourths.
Ask, “How are 3/4 and 7/4 alike and different?” Students write both fractions in three forms and explain each number’s role.
Play a three-card matching game where students pair standard form, numeral-word form, and word form for proper and improper fractions.
Show a recipe using 7/4 cups of water and have students write the amount in numeral-word and word forms.
