What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students combine and separate three-digit quantities by working with hundreds, tens, and ones. They use place-value models and explain when units must be composed or decomposed.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students accurately solve addition and subtraction problems with and without regrouping. They use blocks, drawings, number lines, or equations and explain how hundreds, tens, and ones change.

Common Misconceptions

Students may combine digits by column without regrouping or subtract the smaller digit from the larger digit in each place. They may also misalign hundreds, tens, and ones or struggle when a zero requires an exchange.

How to Assess It

Give students 347 + 286 and 602 − 178. Ask them to solve each with a place-value drawing and explain one regrouping step.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use base-ten blocks to solve 268 + 157 and 425 − 189, exchanging units whenever a place has too many or too few.

  2. Ask students to compare two solutions for 356 + 278 and write which strategy is easier to follow and why.

  3. Draw three digit cards, build two numbers, flip an operation coin, and earn a point for a correct model and solution.

  4. Give students a school supply inventory and have them find totals after deliveries and remaining amounts after classroom orders.
