What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use place value to adjust a three-digit number by groups of ten or one hundred. They record the new number, including when digits regroup across a place.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student quickly finds each related number without counting by ones. The student handles place-value crossings correctly and explains which value changed.

Common Misconceptions

Students may change the ones digit instead of the tens or hundreds value. They may also miss place-value crossings, such as writing 395 plus 10 as 305.

How to Assess It

Give students 398 and ask them to write the results of adding 10, subtracting 10, adding 100, and subtracting 100.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build 326 with base-ten blocks, then add or remove a ten rod or hundred flat and record each new number.

  2. Ask students to explain why subtracting 10 from 402 changes more than one digit, using words, numbers, or a place-value chart.

  3. Students draw number cards, spin +10, -10, +100, or -100, and earn a point for each correct answer.

  4. Give a store inventory count, then add or remove cartons holding 10 or 100 items and calculate the new total.
