What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students find how many more are needed to make 10 when given a number from 1 through 9. They can use counters, fingers, drawings, or number sentences.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students find the missing addend for any starting number from 1 through 9. They show the answer with objects, drawings, fingers, or an equation and explain how they know.

Common Misconceptions

Students may count to 10 but give the total instead of the missing part. They may also reverse familiar pairs or miscount when using fingers or objects.

How to Assess It

Give each student the prompt, “You have 6 counters. How many more make 10?” Ask them to show and write 6 + __ = 10.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students ten-frames and counters, place 1 to 9 counters, and have them fill the empty spaces to make 10.

  2. Ask, “If I have 7 apples, how many more make 10?” Students draw and explain their answer to a partner.

  3. Play Make Ten Memory using numeral cards, with students matching pairs such as 3 and 7 or 6 and 4.

  4. Set out bags labeled 10, place some classroom objects inside, and have students find how many more objects each bag needs.
