What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify the outside boundary of a polygon and describe perimeter as the distance around it. They find that distance by adding all side lengths and naming the unit.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student identifies every side and adds the side lengths accurately. The student explains that the total measures the full distance around the shape and includes the correct unit.

Common Misconceptions

Students may add only the labeled sides or count corners instead of side lengths. Some confuse perimeter with the space inside a shape or forget the unit in their answer.

How to Assess It

Give students a rectangle labeled 7 cm by 3 cm and ask, “What is its perimeter? Show how you know.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs rulers and cardboard polygons to measure each side, record the lengths, and find each total.

  2. Ask students to explain in writing why adding only the length and width does not give a rectangle’s perimeter.

  3. Play Perimeter Match by pairing polygon cards with addition-expression cards and perimeter-total cards.

  4. Measure the sides of a tabletop or bulletin board, then calculate how much border trim would go around it.
