What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students trace the boundary of a polygon and add the length of each side once. They record the total with the correct length unit.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students trace the outside edge, include each side once, and add accurately. They can explain their equation and label the answer with the correct unit.

Common Misconceptions

Students may count corners, add only the labeled sides, or confuse perimeter with area. They may also forget to include units or double only one pair of rectangle sides.

How to Assess It

Give a pentagon with side lengths 3, 4, 2, 5, and 3 inches. Ask students to show an addition equation and state the perimeter with units.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build triangles, rectangles, squares, and pentagons with labeled craft sticks, then add the side lengths around each shape.

  2. Ask students to explain why a rectangle with sides 3, 5, 3, and 5 has a perimeter of 16 units.

  3. Play Perimeter Match by pairing polygon cards with addition equations and perimeter cards.

  4. Give students a garden plan with labeled sides and ask how much fencing is needed to surround it.
