What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read literary and informational texts about a shared topic or theme. They paraphrase key ideas and compare how genre, language, and viewpoint shape each author’s treatment.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately paraphrase ideas without copying sentences. They use details from each text to explain how language, format, or viewpoint creates different effects.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may identify each genre but never explain how genre affects meaning. They may paraphrase by replacing a few words or treat their own opinion as the author’s viewpoint.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short poem and article about the same event. Ask them to paraphrase each message and explain one difference in treatment using evidence.

Ask, “How does each author shape your view of the topic through word choice, details, and format?”
Play Genre Lens Relay, where teams identify figurative language, paraphrase key ideas, and name viewpoints in brief excerpts.
Compare a water conservation poster with a news article, then explain how audience and format shape each message.
