What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read literary and informational texts with attention to language, ideas, and persuasion. They paraphrase key content, compare treatments of related topics, and explain how authors shape meaning.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately paraphrase ideas without copying. They compare how two texts treat a related topic and explain how figurative language, word choice, or rhetorical appeals shape meaning.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may summarize instead of paraphrasing, or swap only a few words from the original. They may name a device or appeal without explaining its effect on meaning, tone, or the reader.
How to Assess It
- Give students a poem and a short article on the same topic. Ask them to paraphrase one key idea, compare each author’s treatment, and explain one important language choice.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs quotation cards to sort by figurative language, word choice, or rhetorical appeal, then require a written explanation for each choice.
Ask students, "How do these two authors shape different views of the same topic through language and evidence?"
Play Evidence Match, where teams connect claims about tone or persuasion to the strongest quotation from two paired texts.
Compare a public service ad and a news commentary on the same issue, then identify audience, appeal, tone, and message.
