What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students restate a passage in their own words while keeping the original meaning and key details. They change both vocabulary and sentence structure without adding opinions.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can read a short grade-level passage and produce a clear, accurate restatement with roughly the same level of detail. The response keeps key ideas and needed details while using little or no wording from the source.

Common Misconceptions

Students often swap a few words for synonyms while keeping the original sentence pattern. They may drop needed details, copy distinctive phrases, or change the author’s meaning.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Give students a 100-word paragraph and ask, “Restate this passage in two or three sentences using new wording and sentence structure.” Check meaning, key details, and copied phrases.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs sentence strips from a paragraph; students rearrange the ideas, replace wording, then compare their version with the source.

  2. Ask students to explain how a paraphrase can be accurate without sounding like the source, then revise one weak example together.

  3. Play Paraphrase Relay: teams rewrite one sentence, pass it on, and earn points for preserved meaning and changed structure.

  4. Have students restate a school announcement as a text message to an absent classmate, keeping every needed date, place, and action.
