What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students make meaning from stories, poems, and informational texts. They retell key parts, explain descriptive words, compare characters’ experiences, and identify rhyming words.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can retell a story using its characters, setting, and major events. The student can name an informational text’s topic and details, explain descriptive words, compare character experiences, and recognize rhymes.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may list random details instead of retelling in order or naming the main topic. They may confuse a character’s experience with a character trait or think words rhyme because their ending letters match.
How to Assess It
- Read, “A sleepy cat sat on a mat. It woke up and chased a rat.” Ask, “What happened, what does sleepy tell us, and which words rhyme?”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs picture cards from a story and a fact book; students sort them, sequence each set, and orally retell both texts.
After two read-alouds, ask, “How are the characters’ experiences alike and different, and which words helped you picture them?”
Play Rhyme Match: students pair picture cards such as cat and hat, then say the rhyming sounds aloud.
Use a class lunch menu and a food story; students name facts from the menu and events from the story.
