What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students condense a text without adding opinions or unneeded details. They identify key events and the message in stories, or the main point and supporting facts in informational texts.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can give a brief, accurate account of a story’s key events and explain its larger message. For an article, the student states the main point and selects only details that support it.

Common Misconceptions

Students may retell every event instead of selecting key ones. They may confuse theme with topic, copy whole sentences, add opinions, or include facts that do not support the main point.

How to Assess It

Give students a short narrative and a short article. Ask for a two-sentence summary of each, including the narrative’s message and the article’s main point.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups event and theme cards from a familiar story, then have them arrange only the cards needed for an accurate summary.

  2. After reading, ask students to write: What is the text mostly about, and which three details belong in the summary?

  3. Play Summary Sort, where teams place sentence cards under Include, Leave Out, or Opinion and defend each choice.

  4. Have students summarize a school announcement or news article for a classmate who has not read it.
