What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify the main message and choose the text parts that best support it. They summarize stories using key plot events and theme, and articles using the central idea and relevant details.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can give a brief summary in their own words without adding opinions. For stories, they connect key plot events to the theme. For articles, they connect relevant details to the central idea.

Common Misconceptions

Students often retell every event or copy full sentences from the text. They may confuse theme with the topic, or choose an interesting detail that does not support the central idea.

How to Assess It

Give students a short passage and ask for a three-sentence summary. Require the response to name the main message and include only details that support it.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs event or detail cards to sort into “include” and “leave out,” then use the included cards to write a summary.

  2. Ask students, “What message does the author want readers to understand, and which two parts of the text best show it?”

  3. Play Summary Switch by having teams replace an unhelpful summary sentence with one that gives a key event or supporting detail.

  4. Read a school announcement and have students write a two-sentence summary for a classmate who was absent.
