What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students retell what they read or hear by speaking or writing. For stories, they explain key events in order. For informational texts, they name the topic and important details.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students give a clear retelling in their own words. They keep story events in order or state an informational topic with accurate supporting details.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may list random details instead of telling events in order. They may add opinions or facts not found in the text. They may confuse an informational topic with one small detail.
How to Assess It
- Read aloud a six-sentence story or factual passage. Ask students to retell it, using beginning, middle, and end for the story or topic and two details for the factual passage.

Ways to Teach It
Give students three picture cards from a familiar story to order, then retell the beginning, middle, and end to a partner.
After a read-aloud, ask students to write or tell which details someone must know to understand the text.
Play Retell Relay, where partners draw a story or information card and complete the matching oral retell frame.
Read a classroom notice, then have students tell its topic and two details a family member would need to know.
