What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read literary and informational texts, summarize key ideas, and support their thinking with relevant details. They interpret figurative language and compare primary and secondary sources about the same topic.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students write concise summaries with the central idea and relevant details. They explain how figurative language affects tone or meaning and compare firsthand and secondhand sources using text evidence.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat a summary as a full retelling or include personal opinions. They may take figurative language literally or assume a primary source is always more accurate than a secondary source.

How to Assess It

Give students a short firsthand account and a textbook paragraph on the same event. Ask them to summarize each, compare the sources, and explain one figurative phrase.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Sort diaries, photographs, news articles, and textbook excerpts into primary and secondary source groups, then defend each choice with evidence.

  2. Ask students to explain how one metaphor changes the tone of a poem or story passage.

  3. Play Summary Switch, where partners trade paragraphs and reduce each one to a central idea and three supporting details.

  4. Compare a local news report with an eyewitness interview, noting what each source adds, leaves out, or interprets.
