What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students plan, draft, revise, and edit writing for a clear purpose and audience. They organize ideas, develop them with details or evidence, and use appropriate conventions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students produce focused, organized writing that fits the purpose and audience. They support ideas with relevant details, connect ideas clearly, and revise for meaning, word choice, grammar, and punctuation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat the first draft as finished or assume longer writing is better writing. They may list evidence without explaining it, shift focus, or mix features from different writing purposes.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Write one paragraph proposing a school improvement. Include a clear claim, two supporting details, transitions, and a concluding sentence.”

Ways to Teach It
Give groups a cut-up model essay to arrange into an introduction, body, and conclusion, then label details and transitions.
Compare two short paragraphs and write which communicates its idea more clearly, citing two specific sentence choices.
Run a revision relay where teams improve vague sentences by adding precise details, rearranging ideas, and correcting conventions.
Have students email the principal proposing one school improvement, using clear reasons, relevant evidence, and a formal closing.
