What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students take a clear position on an issue. They support it with sensible reasons and well-chosen details from sources, then explain how the evidence fits. They organize ideas and connect them with varied transitions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student states a clear position and organizes related reasons into paragraphs. They choose source details that directly support each reason and explain the connection. Transitions guide the reader without sounding repetitive.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may list opinions without explaining why they make sense. They may copy source sentences instead of selecting and explaining evidence. They often overuse transitions such as “first,” “next,” and “last,” or organize ideas in no clear order.
How to Assess It
- Give students two short texts about school uniforms. Ask them to write one paragraph stating a position, using one source detail, explaining it, and including two different transitions.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups claim, reason, evidence, and explanation cards to sort into a logical argument, then add transition cards between ideas.
Ask, “Should fifth graders have homework every night?” and require a position, two reasons, and one source-based detail.
Play Evidence Match by having teams pair claim cards with the strongest evidence card and explain why weaker choices do not fit.
Have students write a letter to the principal proposing one playground improvement, using survey results or school data as evidence.
