What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students make a clear claim and support it with logical reasons, relevant source evidence, and explanation. They organize ideas with varied transitions and address at least one opposing claim.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student states a clear position, organizes reasons logically, and uses relevant source evidence. The student explains each piece of evidence, uses varied transitions, and responds fairly to at least one counterclaim.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may insert quotations without explaining how they support the claim. They may treat a counterclaim as a second opinion to mention, rather than an idea to answer with reasoning and evidence.
How to Assess It
- Give students one claim, two supporting facts, and one opposing fact. Ask them to write one paragraph that uses all three and explains why the claim remains convincing.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups claim, reason, evidence, explanation, transition, and counterclaim cards to arrange into a logical argument.
After reading two short sources on school uniforms, write a claim and explain which evidence best supports it.
Run an evidence relay where teams sort source details into relevant, irrelevant, and counterclaim piles, then defend one choice.
Write an email to the principal proposing one school change, using survey data and answering one likely objection.
